Why You Should Get A Bachelors Degree In Criminal Justice

Some people come online aspiring to join the rank of professionals in the criminal justice field. And who can blame them. It is an exciting career field to join. Some of the professions are indeed noble professions.

Imagine being an FBI agent. This profession puts you in position to protect America and its citizens.

Another one is homeland security. This criminal justice career puts you position to fight terrorism and terrorists. You will be doing combat and matching wits with the bad guys that are trying to hurt America and American citizens.

But did you know one of the best ways to equip yourself for the above careers and others in the criminal justice field is to get a bachelors degree in criminal justice? In this article, I will cover why you should get a bachelors degree in criminal justice.

They are as follows:

1. A bachelors degree in criminal justice will help you get hired. Increasingly, the basic educational requirement for a career in many criminal justice professions is this degree. If you don't have it, you won't even be considered for a job unless you have years of experience to offset this educational requirement.

And guess what? The experience needed to offset this educational requirement is military or law enforcement experience. So, if you don't have military or law enforcement experience, I advise you now to start looking into schools that offer bachelors degree in criminal justice. This way your dream of joining some criminal justice professions will not die prematurely.

2. Getting a bachelor's degree in criminal justice will help you make more money than somebody with an associate degree or high school diploma. A bachelor degree holder makes about $59,000 per year compared to an associate degree holder that makes about $40,000 per year and a high school diploma holder that makes $26,000 per year.

Not that your math is bad, but I can not help but point out that this is a difference of $19,000 per year over an associate degree holder and $33,000 per year over a high school graduate. This kind of salary difference should be motivation enough for somebody to seriously consider getting their bachelors degree in criminal justice.

3. Somebody with a bachelors degree in criminal justice will get better promotion opportunities than an associate degree holder or high school graduate. This is just a fact of life.

Let's take your typical police department as an example. It is no secret that making detective is one of the career progressions any police officer will desire. But increasingly, a bachelors degree is becoming one of the requirements for attaining the rank of detective. Sure, somebody with high school diploma or associate degree can still get be detective with years of experience, but it is difficult to pass up that police officer with a bachelors degree that wants the position also.

The above are just a few of the reasons you should consider getting bachelors degree in criminal justice. There are other reasons. Covering all of them will be a little too much in this short article. If you want to find more reasons to get a bachelors degree in criminal justice, I will advise you do more research on it. Should I Get My Bachelors Degree?

Will Durant, the Pulitzer Prize winning philosopher once said "Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance." It is this 'awareness' of all that you don't know and the realizing how much limitless knowledge is out there yet to be absorbed that is the greatest gift earning a bachelor's degree gives you. Of course there are purely pragmatic reasons to get a college education and earn a bachelor's degree. We've all read that those with a bachelor's degree earn on average 40% more than those with just a high school education. We also know certain jobs require a bachelor's degree in order to be hired and that this degree is necessary if one want to move up to a Masters or PhD level education. But it is what it gives to your mind and to your soul that is truly the best part of getting a Bachelors Degree.

Life is short. Each and every one of us has our own unique talents and abilities. Yet, so many don't ever fully explore their potential due to a lack of education or the societal limits placed on them because of their lack of a degree. One thing that is wonderful about going through the experience of attaining your college degree is the exposure it gives you to various different areas of knowledge and establishing a baseline to work off of for any jobs or education that follows.

It is during this process of learning that you can finally recognize what are and are not your strengths. Perhaps you thought you wanted to pursue something in math, but once in your degree program you find you have a love and affinity for languages. This revelation might the inspire you to look at different exciting career fields than you ever had thought of and would not have even considered if you didn't pursue your bachelors.

Another great reason to obtain your bachelors has to do with people. The truth is that the kinds of people we are exposed to and surround ourselves with is the thing that has the single biggest impact on our lives. Those that have gone through the discipline and work to achieve at least a Bachelor's Degree tend to be more motivated, have bigger goals and in general are more ambitious than those that do not take the trouble to pursue higher education. If you attend college you will meet and form relationships with a whole new world of people that are an entire world away those who stopped at high school. Similarly, if you obtain your
Bachelor's Degree online, the jobs you will be able to get with the degree will introduce you to a whole new caliber of people, not to mention open up the doors to much higher earnings down the line. These days with the proliferation of Online Bachelor Degree Programs there really is no longer any excuse why anyone can't obtain their degree.

There are degrees in just about every subject you can imagine from liberal arts to pre-law and in the sciences, arts, mathematics etc. While attending an institution of higher learning in person either part or full-time certainly offers a much 'fuller' experience and adds the interpersonal relationships that are a great part of the college experience, some of the newer Online Bachelor Degree Programs offer the best of both worlds, allowing interaction with fellow students while offering the ability to do coursework from home.
With the reasonable cost of Online Degree Programs making money almost a non-issue and the ability to work around your own schedule, getting a Bachelor's Degree is something that everyone should do as an absolute minimum in today's information society. It'll not only grow your paycheck, it'll also grow your awareness of what other possibilities there are out in the world for you...something that you would never know if you didn't get your Bachelor's Degree.

The quest for attaining more and more knowledge and qualifications and to prosper in the employment field with the added educational qualifications is driving the new generation towards online education.

Why online education? Some time back, education was only classroom based. Students had to attend classes regularly for 3 to 4 years to complete his bachelor degree. It took another couple of years for his masters too. He or she could enter into the employment field only after completing the educational requirements. The entire process was consuming a great amount of productive time of the youth with in the compound walls of educational institutions.

During the initial days of distance education, one used to watch lecture via a closed circuit TV and complete the assignments from home. He had to sign on at a specified time to attend the lecture. Naturally it was not at his convenience. Where as today, technology has grown far ahead and one can attend to interactive class rooms from allover the world at his convenience.

What is needed is a computer and internet connectivity. Another important contributing factor attracting students for opting online educational programs is availability of library facilities on line. One can just log on to the internet from where ever he is and access to libraries and enrich his requirements and widen his knowledge base.

The possibilities are vast today. One can pick up almost any subject for his online study. Many a number of educational institutions and Universities are offering accredited on line programs. If you are an undergraduate and wish to acquire a Bachelor's degree, you can without disturbing your routine with an online Bachelor degree course. Having Bachelors gives you an option to pursue education further and also seek for more perks in pay, or better position. A bachelor degree holder can choose to go for his masters and after masters he can even go for his Doctorate.

If you are one of those who are looking forward to take up an online Bachelor's Degree, you either have to do a B.A, which is Bachelor of Arts or B.S / B.Sc i.e. Bachelor of Science. You can also do your Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA) and LLB (Bachelor of Law). With Bachelors in hand your career graph is bound to go on an ascending ladder for a take off. You can do your Bachelors in science arts or business or law, which ever your field of interest, but, take care that the university that you take up is recognized.

Since your education also involves money and time, it is crucial, that it is a valid and an accredited university. Doing Bachelors from a non-recognized university, often leaves you empty handed. Neither is his Bachelor's degree valid for a M.S, or Masters, nor does reputed firm recognize it for your due promotion. Career opportunities for those with Bachelor's degree are a lot. Besides you can also continue your job too afford the fees.

One of the most important reasons for students world over to turn to on line educational programs is the cost involved. An online program will cost lesser, around half that of class room education. This is very significant for student. Another reason that pleases many is that the candidate can study from home without having to compromise on his job and family responsibilities. All his house hold expenses will be met through the emoluments he is receiving while he is adding feathers to his cap and reaching higher and higher strata in office and in life.

An online bachelor degree gives a student the same qualifications in their chosen field as its offline counterpart but can be done in a shorter time and generally for a substantially lesser cost. It has also been a great experiment for bricks and mortar universities as they have been able to accept more students into faculties because of less restrictions on time, money and geography for entering youngsters. The benefits of a bachelor degree education are broadened horizons for employment, instant recognition of credentials, and increased opportunities to pursue further more highly skilled levels of study.

Furthermore, cross continental borders with study are now no longer an issue as a distance learning bachelor degree is now available from many universities making it possible for someone to obtain an online degree in a foreign country in the hope that one day they will live and work in that country.
Education systems, particularly those online are continually being refined to make for the most efficient completion by students of their bachelors possible. Online Bachelor Degree Program

Bachelor degrees also known as baccalaureate degrees are the basis of any university education and with the ability now to undertake programs for study online, it is easier and easier for a student with any credentials to enter the course of their choice in further education. In the same way as attained offline, an online program is awarded when a student has fulfilled a certain number of credits or units of study in a specific field. For the majority of courses this is 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits (a semester representing half a year). The difference with a bachelor's degree is that these programs often have no time restrictions for their completion. For example a student may elect to complete one semester per year rather than two to lessen the workload, while another student may elect to power through three semester units per year.

Along with their field specific components most online bachelor degree programs will cover the areas of communication, analytical and logical reasoning, computer skills, and presentation skills as well as understanding of social sciences and the fine arts. Through their respective study students will gain the ability to present ideas in a clear manner, communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts and solve problems using efficient decision making models.

Bachelor programs are simple to begin undertaking with all that is required usually being merely the completion of a few online forms and a wait for approval. Depending on the college you apply to you may undergo some form of screening process and there is the chance you will get declined. The beauty of online degrees is that it is so easy and convenient to keep applying for courses if you happen to be declined for any reason. You can even pay your registration fees from the comfort of your computer chair through the normally available Paypal, or credit card processing.

The most important consideration for students thinking of entering an online bachelor degree course is to weigh up heavily a number of schools that offer the course you want. Because online education is still a relatively new industry, characteristics of schools from pricing to curriculum's can vary wildly so it is best to do plenty of research before making a decision as to which is the best way to obtain your online bachelor degree.

Coursework focuses on practical, industry application of math, physics and engineering design principles. Students tend to take courses in system design, software and hardware engineering, computer architecture and operating systems. They may also complete internships, which allow them to apply engineering principles to real-world situations and gain hands-on experience.

Licensure and Certification
While computer software engineers are not state-regulated, hardware engineers are typically required to obtain state licensure. The licensing process includes completion of an accredited, computer engineering degree program and passage of a preliminary exam followed by four years of supervised training in the field. Candidates may then sit for a final licensing exam and, upon passage, become licensed, professional engineers (PEs).

Software engineers may choose to obtain certification to demonstrate their proficiency. Several computer science organizations, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society, offer certification programs geared superficially toward software engineers. Many software companies also award certification to computer science professionals who prove expertise in their products.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that the projected job growth for computer hardware engineers could reach nine percent from 2010-2020. These engineers earned a median annual salary of $100,920 in 2012, the BLS reports. Computer software developers specializing in software applications earned $90,060 during the same time period, according to the BLS.

Working mom earned bachelor’s degree in 16 months

Arena Dixon of Clarksville, Tenn., is just one short summer away from something she’s wanted for a long time.

In August, she will receive a college degree. At age 36, the single, working mother of two reminisces about not being sure she’d ever be able to finish what she started long ago.

“I married young, and my husband was in the military,” Dixon says. “It was hard to complete college since we moved often. Having to keep up with transcripts and transfer credits from place to place was hard.”
Dixon was excited to find a program that allowed her to complete her degree in a reasonably short amount of time. While browsing the web, Dixon found a website that introduced the Bachelor of Integrated Studies (B.I.S.) in Organizational Communication program.

After looking over all the details she knew that even as a busy working parent, the program was something she could complete. “It was geared toward adults, people just like me,” Dixon notes. “It provided the flexibility of study that I needed.”

The program that made Dixon’s dream possible began at the Murray State University Hopkinsville Regional Campus in the fall of 2007 with the express intent of fast-tracking a degree for nontraditional students.
Short courses, evening courses and online courses meant that students could complete the program in as little as 16 months.

In addition, the B.I.S. degree allows students to use the college credit and experience they already have toward a degree and lets them create their own field of study emphasis. Potential students can also earn credit for long-term job experience; ideal for a candidate who has worked at a company for several years and does not yet have their degree.

Dixon admits that financial concerns and paying for school are things to consider when thinking about entering the program. “I was fortunate enough to receive financial assistance because I’m a single mother,” she explains. “But even for students who must pay out-of-pocket, this program is affordable. Every dollar you may spend for this goes a bit further than it would for other education choices. The investment in this wonderful, wonderful program is worth every penny.”

Value of an Associates vs. Bachelors Degree

While many young students often believe that a four year bachelor’s degree will provide a greater array of job opportunities and increased salary benefits, recent findings reveal that, in some cases, an associate’s degree provides workers with similar perks to that of their four year graduate co-workers. In many careers, an associate’s degree will provide students with enough preparation and experience to compete in the job market amongst other applicants with degrees of higher education.

When deciding between pursuing a bachelor’s or an associate’s degree, students should reflect on their desired career pathway, and then review the data and information to determine which degree will act as the optimal vehicle for their professional destination.

Evaluating Time and Cost

In a time of increased tuition costs and tight economic constraints, many students are seeking out ways to cut the costs of higher education. For many students, the choice to pursue an associate’s degree may lead to greater a greater financial return, as associate’s degree programs may commonly be completed in just two years. On the contrary, bachelor’s degrees typically require four years of study; therefore, an associate’s degree can sometimes cost $80,000 less than a bachelor’s program. As an associate’s degree can be completed in a shorter period of time, leading to a decreased tuition and coursework cost, associate’s degrees can provide many students with realistic educational pathways to accommodate unique financial, scheduling, and other various personal constraints.

Adding to the perk of a shorter and less expensive educational opportunity, individuals who choose to earn their associate’s degree also have the option of transferring some of their credits to a university, if additional coursework is desired or required. In fact, many community colleges that provide students with associate’s degree programs work with cooperating universities to allow students to easily transfer their coursework into an extended four year program and degree.

As the College Board explains, “You receive an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree after completing two years of study similar to the first two years of a four-year college. Community colleges or four-year universities offer associate degrees. After earning an A.A. or an A.S., you may transfer to a four-year college to complete the requirements for a bachelor's degree.” When considering the case of academic transfer, students are able to pursue an associate’s degree while still maintaining the option to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the future.

Comparing Salaries

As research and data supports, individuals with higher degrees earn, on average, more than individuals with a high school diploma. As CNN reports, “Not surprisingly, investing in post-high school education can also have a strong impact on salary. While high school graduates with no college education collect an average weekly salary of $583, according to Current Population Survey data, that figure jumps nearly 15 percent to $670 for associate degree holders.”

When breaking down the salary data even further, however, many studies reveal that earning bachelor’s degree typically pays, on average, a greater salary than that of a worker with an associate’s degree. While this tends to be the case, CNN further asserts that “A four-year education is not always the ticket to a swollen bank account,” as the cost of a four year institution often outweighs the intended salary benefits. Specifically, CNN reports that, according to the College Board, an average two year educational instate costs approximately $2,191 each year. On the other hand, an average four year university costs more than twice as much, with an average tuition expense of $5,500. Adding to this, the private four year university tuition costs soar, on average, to over $21,200 each year, leading to drastic impacts on the potential salary benefits that may be earned from a degree upon graduation.

Adding to the costs of the different degrees, CNN also asserts that many of the current top paying jobs in the United States solely require an associate’s degree. In fact, in a list of their top paying jobs, the following careers either pay associate degree holders more money or equivalent salaries to bachelor’s degree holders:
  • Computer Specialist – Average income of $59,480
  • Nuclear Technician – Average income of $59,200
  • Dental Hygienist – Average income of $58,350
  • Radiation Therapist – Average income of $57,700
  • Fashion designer – Average income of $55,840
  • Aerospace engineering and operations technician – Average income of $52,500
  • Diagnostic medical sonographer – Average income of $52,490
  • Registered nurse – Average income of $52,330
  • Engineering technician – Average income of $49,440
Evaluating Options

Ultimately, when making the choice to pursue an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree, the primary concerns to consider are the costs of each school / degree, the requirements for the desired career pathway, and additionally the amount of time one can invest in his or her coursework and studies.

Many associate’s degree programs are open-enrollment, allowing students with high school diplomas or equivalents to sign up for classes without applying; in contrast, universities often require a more intense application process. If an applicant’s grades or transcripts are not up to par with a university’s standards, the pathway to pursue an associate’s degree can allow students to either prepare for a well-paying career, or prepare for transfer to a university at a later date.

How Employers View Your Online Bachelor's Degree

When Erik Schnackenberg, 28, decided to get his bachelor’s degree at Pace University several years ago, he was confident about his decision to take courses entirely online.

If anything was going to get in the way of his job prospects, he figured it would be the lack of a master’s degree – not his choice to pursue distance education.

“I’ve interviewed several places and no one has asked me if I’m going on-campus for classes,” says Schnackenberg, a train conductor instructor and full-time student. “I think they care more about my major and my GPA.”

Schnackenberg might be onto something. The number of job candidates with online bachelor’s degrees has rapidly increased in recent years, recruiters say. At the same time, acceptance of the degrees by employers is becoming more common.

[Find out if online learning is right for you.]

That hasn’t always been the case, though.

Only a few years ago, in 2009, a literature review by Cleveland State University found that human resource managers, executives and other gatekeepers had negative perceptions of online degrees. Some recruiters blame the stigma on the last decade’s "diploma mills" – online, unaccredited programs known for offering a degree to anyone with a full wallet.

But these days, employers rarely question the quality of online programs, says Susan Fontana, regional vice president of Manpower, a global recruiting firm.

“Things have changed,” says Fontana, whose company works with Fortune 100 companies and small and midsize businesses. “I think 10 years ago, you probably had a little more questioning, but it really is so much more accepted today.”

In fact, sometimes an online bachelor’s degree can be an advantage in the eye of an employer, Fontana says. In some cases, entrepreneurs favor students such as Schnackenberg, who have juggled multiple commitments while earning their degree.

“When you think about balancing a job and the needs of a family with school, that says a lot about the discipline of a person,” Fontana says.

There are several reasons why online bachelor’s degrees are increasingly becoming accepted, including the sheer number of students taking online courses, experts say. About 7.1 million students took at least one online course during the fall of 2012, according to the most recent findings from the Babson Survey Research Group.

[Determine whether your learning style suits online education.]

Chris Cullen, a brand consultant for colleges and universities, says the perception of online degrees has also changed as top-ranked schools have started offering more distance education options and massive open online courses, known as MOOCs.

“In the past couple of years schools like MIT, Stanford, Duke and Johns Hopkins have joined the online education landscape,” says Cullen, managing director at Infinia DC. "It elevates the concept of online higher ed. Just by their participation the category is lifted."

Despite the evolution of online education, some employers are still wary of online degrees, recruiters say.

Mary Massad, division president of recruiting services for Insperity, a firm that provides recruiting services to more than 100,000 small and midsize businesses, says her clients have a variety of opinions on the degrees.

About 75 percent of her clients have embraced online credentials. As for the other 25 percent, she doesn’t count on changing their minds.

“There are people who are very resistant and very traditional in the way they perceive an online degree,” she says. “For some, it’s just deeply embedded in how they think.”

Although having an online bachelor’s degree isn’t a deal breaker for most of her clients, Massad says having an online degree from an unaccredited school is a sure way to get a resume discarded. Before you enroll in a program, make sure it is accredited, she says.

“You can go into this with eyes wide open – and you should,” she says.

[Discover whether your online program is accredited.]

Cullen, of Infinia DC, says some employers favor traditional bachelor’s degrees simply because they are more familiar.

To avoid having an online degree discounted, he recommends enrolling in a program that has brand recognition in the relevant field.

“In time, a person’s experience will outweigh their education on their resume,” he says. “But all things being equal, an employer will judge your education based on their own personal familiarity with the institution that provided the degree.”

The $10,000 Bachelor's Degree Arrives

Colleges’ spring terms are winding down, which means thousands of newly minted graduates of four-year colleges will soon be entering the workforce, encumbered by more than $29,000 in student loan debt, per average debtor. At the same time, there’s wide debate about how well college prepares students to compete for the kinds of jobs that would help them pay off their debts.

This disconnect at the top of the academic pyramid is being exploited by community colleges and online educational institutions, often to students’ advantage. What they lack in ivy and clock towers, these places make up for by understanding how to cater to busy working adults and their employers.

Today in Washington, the disruption of higher ed will take another step with the announcement of the first nationally available $10,000 bachelor’s degree. That’s $10,000 for the whole degree, not per year. It will be offered by College for America, an online operation of Southern New Hampshire University. The college keeps its costs down by offering classes online. Unlike other online schools, it operates through employers. Companies such as McDonald’s (MCD) and Partners HealthCare, a hospital operator that’s the biggest private employer in Massachusetts, will offer College for America as an employee benefit and as a way to upgrade the quality of their workforces.

BLOG: Why Education Spending Doesn't Lead to Economic Growth
College for America doesn’t teach courses with credit hours. It teaches competencies, and it tests them using projects that resemble work that employees would be called on to do in their real lives. The first bachelor’s degrees to be offered are in health-care management and communications. College for America soft-launched last year with various associate’s degrees.

College-bound high schoolers may not find any of this particularly exciting, which is deliberate. Paul LeBlanc, the president of Southern New Hampshire University, told me the program is designed for adult learners who don’t want the “bubble,” with quads and clubs, that traditional college-age students do. “They’re chomping down a meal in the parking lot, racing home to see their kids before they get to sleep.” They’re all about acquiring and demonstrating mastery of new skills, and getting paid for them.

College for America “recognizes the knowledge and skills that our folks already have, so they’re not sitting through an Introduction to Business course that they could probably teach,” says Lisa Schumacher, director of education strategies at McDonald’s. Mary Jane Ryan, workforce development director at Partners, told me the pilot project with College for America is going “fabulously well.”

STORY: Ideo's Sandy Speicher Reimagines Education in Peru
The school’s online degree won’t solve the problem of college costs for everyone, but the trend toward teaching practical skills may well trickle up. Says LeBlanc: “There are a lot of these programs coming. There are already a fair number of competency-based programs in existence, thirtyish. There are 130 in development and hundreds being discussed. This is a wave. This is coming.”

There’s unquestionably a market for education that’s tightly focused on employers’ needs. In the last few weeks, I’ve heard inspiring stories from schools such as Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa, Seattle Colleges (formerly known as Seattle Community Colleges), and City Colleges of Chicago. I spoke to students like Janet Murumba, 33, a Kenyan immigrant and mother who received a certificate in industrial manufacturing. Her Seattle Colleges program blends academics with hands-on skills to the benefit of both. Her aspiration: to build airplane wings at Boeing (BA). “In class,” she told me, “I could drill for the first time, and it was like, ‘Oh God, it’s happening, it’s real.’”

Bachelor of Arts (BA): Psychology Degree Overview

A Bachelor of Arts in Psychology can lead to careers in social services, counseling, human services or community relations. Discover the concepts involved in these programs, and find out what is commonly required for admission. Also, get details on graduate studies, which can lead to work as a psychologist.

Essential Information

Individuals interested in applying to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology program need to have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Students get fundamental training in humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, and they learn about concepts, theories, strategies and tactics that apply to human behavior. Some programs offer a concentration or specialization in the field, such as human development or organizational studies. Furthermore, psychology students are encouraged to engage in research and participate in internships and other hands-on activities.

While a doctoral degree and licensure is required to become a clinical psychologist, majoring in psychology at the bachelor's level can lead to entry-level work in human or social services agencies and prepare students for graduate school.

Course Topics

These programs generally offer education in human behavior and related sciences. Students can get an overview of several areas of psychology, such as abnormal, physiological and developmental psychology. They could find themselves studying such topics as:

  • Perception
  • Psychological research methods
  • Cognitive psychology
  • Child development
  • Personality theories

Popular Career Options

A bachelor's degree in psychology generally doesn't prepare graduates to become psychologists; a graduate degree, most often a doctorate, is often necessary for that profession. However, individuals who obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology can qualify for psychologist positions in federal government agencies and a variety of other careers. Other possible directions a graduate might take include those in social work or social services, human resources, community relations, education, research or counseling assistance. Individuals might choose to pursue such positions as:

  • Case managers
  • Human resource specialists
  • Counseling aide

Employment and Salary Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), medical services managers had median wages of $88,580 in 2012 and an employment growth of 23% from 2012-2022. Human resources specialists were projected to see 7% growth that decade and earn median wages of $55,640 in 2012. Psychiatric technicians, another job for bachelor's holders, were projected to see 5% growth in employment from 2012-2022. They earned median annual wages of $27,440 in 2012.

Continuing Education, Licensure and Board Certification

The B.A. in Psychology is ideal for students who intend to pursue graduate training in psychology or a related field. Graduate programs, such as Master of Science in Psychology or a Doctor of Psychology, allow students to focus on personal interests, and graduation from these programs can meet eligibility requirements for licensure as a clinical, counseling or school psychologist.

All states require licensure for psychologists who work directly with patients. Professionals can also opt to obtain board certification through organizations, such as the American Board of Professional Psychology or the American Academy of Clinical Psychology, to establish their expertise.

Should I Get My Bachelors Degree Online?

With the proliferation of the internet access to higher education has become easier than ever before.  Many adults and even young people who never had the chance to obtain their Bachelor's Degree can now do so through various distance learning programs in an almost unlimited number of subjects.  Online education can offer many advantages, especially to those where a traditional school is not an option.  Still, there are some important things to keep in mind before you jump into an Online Bachelor Degree program.

Just like traditional schools, not all online bachelor degree programs are the same.  There are those schools that are ‘virtual' and don't have an actual physical presence.  Then there are ‘distance learning' variants from traditional schools.  Distance learning programs from established schools have the advantage of having the same value and reputation as the school that issues the degree. This can be great if you obtain a degree from a major institution that offers an online option.

In the job market, school reputation can be an important factor in gaining interviews and competing against other job seekers.  Some nationally recognized traditional schools that offer great Online Bachelor Degree programs include Adelphi University, Boston University, Berkeley College in New York , several of the UC Schools in California, Colorado State University and New York University among others. These online variants of traditional degree programs are nice in that no one will know that your "NYU" degree was gotten online.  It will hold the same weight as if you lived in NYC and completed it in person.  But with the added prestige of obtaining a degree from one of these schools also comes the reality that they typically are more expensive than lesser known online programs.

For that reason many people choose to pursue their Online Bachelor Degree from one of the many quality ‘virtual' schools such as The University of Phoenix, Devry, Kaplan or WGU.  These virtual schools offer much of the experience of the traditional schools but without the cost and often with more lax admission standards.  One important factor to consider however is whether or not the institutional is accredited.  Accredited institutions usually only accept course credits from other accredited schools.  This can be important if you plan on pursuing a Masters Level Degree down the road.  For this reason, I would definitely recommend you steer away from non-accredited programs.  While they can save you money, they limit your options and might not be as respected in certain career fields.

One thing to keep in mind when considering obtaining your Bachelor Degree online is whether employers will accept the degree as readily and with as much respect as a traditional degree program.  For most liberal arts related fields that are not top tier firms this usually will not be an issue.  In fact, most employers will not even know your degree was achieved online.  In certain fields however, it will make a difference.

Those areas of study that require hands-on practical experience as well as mandatory hours of intern or externships such as nursing and certain physical sciences might not be accepted by employers.  Additionally, one should remember before one embarks on a fully online degree program that you will be missing out on many of the internship, network building and personal growth experiences that one does when in a traditional school.  A great number of people get their first career job after college through internships and personal connections they made during school.  This should not be downplayed.

With that said, for certain individuals an Online Bachelor Degree can be a good choice.  Especially for those already working, those where funds or time preclude a regular school, or those that already have a traditional degree but want to simply learn a new subject where the reputation of the school or the benefits of a ‘brick and mortar' institution are not important.  Online Bachelor Degrees open up the world of higher education to a broader audience than ever before.

The Differences between Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science

Many universities offer both Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BS), some schools even do so for the same career track. You might be able to get a BA or a BS in psychology, for instance, which can be very confusing for students that are trying to decide what to do for the rest of their lives. It can be a lot of pressure to have to make a decision that big so it is very important to ensure that students have an information framework big enough that can allow each individual to make an informed choice that fits with his or her lifestyle, personality, and skills needs.

Choosing a Bachelor of Arts: The Perks and the Downfalls

The Bachelor of Arts is currently the most common degree among students attending a university for the first time. Bachelors of Arts degrees usually take about four years, but they might take only three years in several countries, particularly in the European Union. Bachelors of Arts can be in liberal arts, science or based on a comprehensive curriculum that covers both of these subjects together.

A Bachelor of Arts usually has more electives than its Bachelor of Science counterpart and, in short, this basically means that it is likely to be the best option for those students that wish to explore things outside of their degree or have not completely made up their mind yet about what they want to do for the rest of their lives. A few universities around the world do require that the student take a foreign language course before graduating with a BA. Individuals with this type of degree tend to go into the arts, sales, business, media, and communications among many other industries.

Choosing a Bachelor of Science: The Perks and the Downfalls

Unlike a BA, a BS can take up to five years, but it might take only four, depending on the location. Getting a BS degree is more restrictive by nature since it was created to give students a solid technical background and this involves many less electives than those available for a person getting a BA degree. The BS is designed to give students an edge when applying for grad school and it can help to give them specialized information in their field. However, Bachelor of Science degrees are usually very restrictive and they might not be ideal for everyone. Many universities suggest that students that intend to go onto higher education courses, like Medical School, from BS degrees, also plan an alternative career path since admission to these schools is uncertain and the ability to go depends on more than one factor. This type of degree is particularly recommended for those with a very strong interest in science that wish to expand their horizons in that regard. Additionally, many young professionals and career advisors think that in a science setting a BS undergraduate degree will give a student an edge over a BA undergraduate degree.
