Should I Get My Bachelors Degree?

Will Durant, the Pulitzer Prize winning philosopher once said "Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance." It is this 'awareness' of all that you don't know and the realizing how much limitless knowledge is out there yet to be absorbed that is the greatest gift earning a bachelor's degree gives you. Of course there are purely pragmatic reasons to get a college education and earn a bachelor's degree. We've all read that those with a bachelor's degree earn on average 40% more than those with just a high school education. We also know certain jobs require a bachelor's degree in order to be hired and that this degree is necessary if one want to move up to a Masters or PhD level education. But it is what it gives to your mind and to your soul that is truly the best part of getting a Bachelors Degree.

Life is short. Each and every one of us has our own unique talents and abilities. Yet, so many don't ever fully explore their potential due to a lack of education or the societal limits placed on them because of their lack of a degree. One thing that is wonderful about going through the experience of attaining your college degree is the exposure it gives you to various different areas of knowledge and establishing a baseline to work off of for any jobs or education that follows.

It is during this process of learning that you can finally recognize what are and are not your strengths. Perhaps you thought you wanted to pursue something in math, but once in your degree program you find you have a love and affinity for languages. This revelation might the inspire you to look at different exciting career fields than you ever had thought of and would not have even considered if you didn't pursue your bachelors.

Another great reason to obtain your bachelors has to do with people. The truth is that the kinds of people we are exposed to and surround ourselves with is the thing that has the single biggest impact on our lives. Those that have gone through the discipline and work to achieve at least a Bachelor's Degree tend to be more motivated, have bigger goals and in general are more ambitious than those that do not take the trouble to pursue higher education. If you attend college you will meet and form relationships with a whole new world of people that are an entire world away those who stopped at high school. Similarly, if you obtain your
Bachelor's Degree online, the jobs you will be able to get with the degree will introduce you to a whole new caliber of people, not to mention open up the doors to much higher earnings down the line. These days with the proliferation of Online Bachelor Degree Programs there really is no longer any excuse why anyone can't obtain their degree.

There are degrees in just about every subject you can imagine from liberal arts to pre-law and in the sciences, arts, mathematics etc. While attending an institution of higher learning in person either part or full-time certainly offers a much 'fuller' experience and adds the interpersonal relationships that are a great part of the college experience, some of the newer Online Bachelor Degree Programs offer the best of both worlds, allowing interaction with fellow students while offering the ability to do coursework from home.
With the reasonable cost of Online Degree Programs making money almost a non-issue and the ability to work around your own schedule, getting a Bachelor's Degree is something that everyone should do as an absolute minimum in today's information society. It'll not only grow your paycheck, it'll also grow your awareness of what other possibilities there are out in the world for you...something that you would never know if you didn't get your Bachelor's Degree.

Community colleges eager to offer bachelor's degree

Riverside Community College District wants to expand one of its two-year programs into a four-year program if a bill becomes state law.

Administrators are trying to choose one of four career programs to expand into a bachelor’s degree program. The choices are: registered nursing at Riverside City College, the physician’s assistant and dental hygiene programs at Moreno Valley College and the video gaming program at Norco College, said Robin Steinback, interim vice chancellor for educational services, workforce development and planning,

The Legislature passed a bill to authorize up to 15 community college districts to award bachelor’s degrees in limited circumstances as a pilot program.

“We definitely want to be considered as one of the 15 pilots,” Steinback said.

On Friday, Senate Bill 850 was awaiting Gov. Jerry Brown’s signature. California would join 21 states that allow community colleges to confer four-year degrees.

Each district could offer one bachelor’s degree program, she said. The programs could begin as soon as January and would have to start by 2017. Supporters say the effort would address a statewide shortage of adults with bachelor’s degrees in the workforce.

Community colleges would not be able to offer degrees that Cal State or UC campuses already have. However, the law would allow community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees in fields where Cal State or UC cannot accommodate demand for a program, the California Community Colleges chancellor’s office said in a news release.

Community colleges don’t yet know all the criteria for them to add four-year programs, Steinback said; however, the district has begun its review and will work with UC Riverside, Cal State San Bernardino and other Cal State campuses.

San Bernardino Valley College has no immediate plans to join the pilot program, said college spokesman Gregory Zerovnik, citing insufficient funding, faculty and support staff, which were all lost during the state budget crisis.

“Now the funding spigot is being very, very slowly turned back on,” he said.

Mt. San Jacinto College officials could not be reached Friday.

Zerovnik said the college’s two-year nursing program wouldn’t be considered for the state’s pilot because Cal State and UC campuses all offer four-year nursing degrees.

However, Steinback said the expectation is growing for registered nurses to have bachelor’s degrees, the state and region don’t have enough nurses, and RCC’s registered nursing program is first-rate.

“There is a nursing shortage,” she said. “If we have unmet workforce need whether it’s statewide or in our region, the argument could be made that we should offer that,” Steinback said.

RCC, Norco College and Moreno Valley College were just re-accredited. As part of the accreditation review, the colleges realized they have enough faculty with doctoral degrees and expertise to teach upper level courses, equipment, technology and facilities to expand any of the four programs being considered, she said.

Should I Get My Bachelors Degree Online?

With the proliferation of the internet access to higher education has become easier than ever before.  Many adults and even young people who never had the chance to obtain their Bachelor's Degree can now do so through various distance learning programs in an almost unlimited number of subjects.  Online education can offer many advantages, especially to those where a traditional school is not an option.  Still, there are some important things to keep in mind before you jump into an Online Bachelor Degree program.

Just like traditional schools, not all online bachelor degree programs are the same.  There are those schools that are ‘virtual' and don't have an actual physical presence.  Then there are ‘distance learning' variants from traditional schools.  Distance learning programs from established schools have the advantage of having the same value and reputation as the school that issues the degree. This can be great if you obtain a degree from a major institution that offers an online option.

In the job market, school reputation can be an important factor in gaining interviews and competing against other job seekers.  Some nationally recognized traditional schools that offer great Online Bachelor Degree programs include Adelphi University, Boston University, Berkeley College in New York , several of the UC Schools in California, Colorado State University and New York University among others. These online variants of traditional degree programs are nice in that no one will know that your "NYU" degree was gotten online.  It will hold the same weight as if you lived in NYC and completed it in person.  But with the added prestige of obtaining a degree from one of these schools also comes the reality that they typically are more expensive than lesser known online programs.

For that reason many people choose to pursue their Online Bachelor Degree from one of the many quality ‘virtual' schools such as The University of Phoenix, Devry, Kaplan or WGU.  These virtual schools offer much of the experience of the traditional schools but without the cost and often with more lax admission standards.  One important factor to consider however is whether or not the institutional is accredited.  Accredited institutions usually only accept course credits from other accredited schools.  This can be important if you plan on pursuing a Masters Level Degree down the road.  For this reason, I would definitely recommend you steer away from non-accredited programs.  While they can save you money, they limit your options and might not be as respected in certain career fields.

One thing to keep in mind when considering obtaining your Bachelor Degree online is whether employers will accept the degree as readily and with as much respect as a traditional degree program.  For most liberal arts related fields that are not top tier firms this usually will not be an issue.  In fact, most employers will not even know your degree was achieved online.  In certain fields however, it will make a difference.

Those areas of study that require hands-on practical experience as well as mandatory hours of intern or externships such as nursing and certain physical sciences might not be accepted by employers.  Additionally, one should remember before one embarks on a fully online degree program that you will be missing out on many of the internship, network building and personal growth experiences that one does when in a traditional school.  A great number of people get their first career job after college through internships and personal connections they made during school.  This should not be downplayed.

With that said, for certain individuals an Online Bachelor Degree can be a good choice.  Especially for those already working, those where funds or time preclude a regular school, or those that already have a traditional degree but want to simply learn a new subject where the reputation of the school or the benefits of a ‘brick and mortar' institution are not important.  Online Bachelor Degrees open up the world of higher education to a broader audience than ever before.
