It's not always cheaper, although some solutions will save you great deal of money, but it works as you want it to work and it's your own creation what gives it additional value and also nice reference in your CV if you are applying for a job. DIY creations are unlimited. You can build a 1 sensor that would cost you 10 in a store or a computer controlled cutter that costs 1000 but you just spent 200 building it.
8. Mr./Mrs. Fix-It
Not only everyday fixes, like changing a burned out light bulb or faulty fuse aren't scary moments any more - you might also be able to cope with more complex problems with your computer etc. That doesn't only save you money but also works great as a pick up line...
